Alicia Daniels, Autism Grandma and Community Hero.

by Giset King

1. What is the name of your organization?

The name of the organization is Autism Moms Give Back.

2 . What is the vision of your organization?

The vision of the organization is to help those who are in need. We want to make things a little easier for them, and let them know someone cares and they’re not alone.

3. What inspired you to start your organization?

Almost 10 years ago we were living in a hotel and were dependent upon the help of others. It took a lot out of me to ask for help, but I did. I, then made a promise to God that when we were in a better place, we would give back. 9 years ago I started giving back to my Children’s schools. Then, about 5 years ago Autism Moms Give Back became a reality and it started receiving help from other autism moms and just good-hearted people.

4. What are some obstacles or difficulties you have faced?

The fact that we are not a non-profit has held us back from receiving a lot of help. So our donations come from the kindness of people and ourselves. So sometimes we don’t have enough to help all that we want to or to do some of the things that we would like to do.

5. What has been the most rewarding moment as a Community Leader?

Seeing the joy on Children’s faces and the Thank-yous. I don’t do this for praise or to be seen. I do this because it needs to be done and the Bible says to whom much is given much is required. So I do my part.

6. What would you like to achieve with your organization in the future?

I would like to become a non-profit organization. I would love to be able to do more than just help at Christmas.

7. How do you balance work, home, and community work?

Honestly, I’m still juggling them daily. Lol. I just wrote out a to-do list and number them in order of importance and do all that I can in a day off that list. I also pray a lot and spend a few minutes a day just to breathe, meditate and collect my thoughts.

8. Who is someone you admire and why?

I admire anyone who can keep a schedule. Lol. I use to be one of them. Now I go with the flow. Life with a special needs child doesn’t always allow for to-do lists and schedules. To name a person, that would be Jean TenBrink. She’s such an inspiration to me. She’s the sweetest momma I’ve met, but she’s a momma bear when advocating. She does so much for our community and helps so many people, but honestly, she doesn’t get the recognition she deserves. Still, she keeps doing it because she’s filling a need.

9. What will you say to other Special Needs moms that feel overwhelmed?

That it’s ok. We all get that way. Just take a minute to get away from everything. Go to your bathroom, closet, car or back-yard, close your eyes, and just breathe. Or my new thing, I turn on my favorite song and sing at the top of my lungs and dance. I do that because for the length of that song I’m carefree and am only thinking about enjoying my song. Also, get you a support team, even if it’s just 1 person. someone that you can talk to.
