Escobar-Advocate of the Community.

My organization is The IEP Firm. It is an advocacy firm for students with disabilities who qualify for an IEP or a 504 plan.

2. What is the vision of your organization?

Our vision is a world where people with disabilities and their families can enjoy the same benefits as everyone else. A place where they can develop their full potential and thus fully participate in the community.

3. What inspired you to start your organization?

My inspiration comes from all the parents who fight for their children with disabilities every day and collaborate with school districts to improve systems that do not favor them. I was inspired by my students who, despite their difficulties, continue to fight every day to have a quality learning experience. My son Andres, a disability rights guru, is also my inspiration.

4. What are some obstacles or difficulties you have faced?

The biggest obstacle is reluctance. Some people in the system feel very comfortable with the way things are and don't dare or don't know how to make a change. It's hard to stand up and speak for minorities, especially in a room where most people can't relate to their reality.

5. What has been the most rewarding moment as a Community Leader?

I don't have an isolated moment that satisfies me. It fills my heart with satisfaction every time I see parents advocating for their rights and their children's rights. It is so rewarding when I see parents advocating for other parents who may have just started on the path of special education.

6. What would you like to achieve with your organization/work in the future?

We are currently working on in-person training since we had to suspend them temporarily due to the pandemic. Also, we are collaborating with school districts to ensure that administrators conduct field trips to inclusive places suitable for students with physical or sensory limitations.

7. How do you balance work, home, and community work?

It's really hard to say no to a parent who calls me in crisis. However, I try to respect my son's needs, he deserves his own quality time and attention from his mother.

8. Who is someone you admire and why?

In the area of special education, I admire Ms. Jackie Cros, who is my mentor and collaborator. I admire her ability to remain level-headed in the most intense ARD meetings. I also admire her human quality, her warmth, and kindness.

9. What will you say to other Special Needs Moms that feel overwhelmed?

To all special needs mothers I want you to say every day: Breath, calm down, this is not an emergency! Don't worry, don't despair. I always tell them to get trained and learn about the IEP process so they can exercise their right to equal participation. I also tell them that they are doing well!
