Before I began my interview I just want to say I thank God for allowing me to help someone else. And also especial thanks to Giset King, the co-founder of Café Azul, for giving me the opportunity to help others through her organization! I am so excited about working with her and can’t wait to see all the accomplishments and milestones we are going to reach.

CATX Autism- Angela, tells us about your journey as an autism mom?

AK: Well, my journey as an autism mom has been up, down, sad, tired, stressful, heart-breaking. happy, excited, exciting, angry, nervous.just all emotions mix in one. But my journey had been hard at times and uplifting. But I would not change one thing on my journey and I know it’s more to come.

CATxAUtism -How was your journey of having 2 kids in the spectrum? Tell us about your trails, triumphs, and roadblocks?-

AK: Well my journey of having two sons on the spectrum is full of good and bad things. Some things helped my sons and some things hinder them too. However, they have overcome a lot of obstacles but we just keep pushing and doing amazing things. Now my trials- have been a lot of things, like dealing with other people's opinions, having to defend your child, going against others that said they will never do certain things, always dealing with appointments, docs, meds, schools, and Therapist. It just sometimes becomes a lot but I have to keep pushing. A triumph in our journey was definitely when my sons Graduated! Trey, now 21 graduated from Thurgood Marshall High School and Jaylon, 18. graduated from Channelview High School. Another significant moment was when I found a group home for my oldest son Trey. Angels That Work Inc group home. They are a wonderful place and so blessed I found it. Roadblocks- well there are always going to be Roadblocks but for us, it has been several things like going through different agencies and group homes for Trey or going to school. ARD meetings, and teachers trying to tell you what is best for your children and docs telling you your sons will never be able to do certain things and dealing with Guardianship and lawyers, money and time. I am so proud because my boys have accomplished things they said they would not ever do. They both graduated. Also, Jaylon went to prom. t

They know how to use computers, play video games, and other amazing things. So don’t listen to what others tell you. You need to listen to your spirit and let your children do as they please.

CATXAutism-Why did you decide to join Café Azul TX Autism?

AK: I joined because I want to help others that don’t know about there rights and things about autism that we have no clue about and the resources that are out the for bilingual people like us and also to let people know they are not alone and it does get better.

CATxAutism: What does Café Azul Tx Autism mean to You?

AK: Café AzulTX Autism to me means family and then being able to guide and lead someone else in the same direction on resources and understanding about autism and also being able to get help for people who have no clue about anything on autism or resources. I was once just like them, I didn’t know anything about the resources or the help that’s out there. So that’s why it’s special to me, so I can help someone out there that is just as clueless as I used to be.

CATx Autism:What is the greatest thing you want to accomplish in the autism / special needs community?

AK:The greatest thing I would like to accomplish is to educate, inspire and motivate other parents to know their rights and the resources that are available.I am committed to do whatever I can do to lead them and help them to go in the right direction. I pray God opens up more doors in our direction so we can be able to be even bigger help in the special needs community for autism. So happy to be an ambassador and activist speaker for autism and Cafe AzulTx Autism 🥰#cafeazultx#autism#autismmomhouston#specialneeds#asd#autismparenting#cafeazultxteam#makingwaves#differentnotless🧩
